Hired a car many times in croatia, driven all round northern parts; istrial and down to plitvice and krka as well as zadar and split.

Its one of the easiest countries to drive in, you can even manage without satnav most of the time as the road signs are so good. Roads are not very busy and other drivers are calm and polite.

I hired a car in Dubrovnik (town not airport)... they asked if I was going out of the country, which I wasn't but didn't get the impression it would have been an issue if I had said 'yes'.

Only drove in Croatia but fantastic country.

I think the( green card) is proof of insurance when going into Montenegro.
Some of the rental companies give you it others want to charge its all a bit vague.

I hired a car there last year. Budget I think was the brand, but there are loads located at the airport all in the carpark with a fuel station nearby so it's all convenient. Bit of a wait to pick up the car, other than that all was as expected. Get a list of companies at the airport and pick the cheapest.

Don't know what the green card is, but if you are driving accross the border you need to get the enhanced insurance so bear that in mind if comparing prices or expect to pay a bit more if it's not mentioned already in your quote.

I only did Croatia, but that was a great place to drive around. Country packed full of mountains, beaches and islands. Just make sure you have 'include toll roads' options on stat nav. I drove the first 2 hours thinkining that the whole country didn't have any motorways until I realised the navigation has filtered them all out!
Tolls were cheap from memory.

Why's it called Montenegro?

That's Italian for "black mountain".

They don't speak Italian there though.

What's that about then?

Drove that route from Dubrovnik down, via the coast mainly, to the Albanian border in 1970. Easy back then because the whole area was within what was known as Yugoslavia.

Most spectacular part was the road overlooking the bay of Kotor ( where Kirk Douglas shot much of the location clips when filming Vikings ).

Remember checking in to the hotel, in Budva, and being told we were ahead and looking comfortable against W Germany only to find out at dinner that the krauts had staged a comeback and eliminated us.

I've done a drive all down that way. Landed in Podgorica and then into Croatia, down through the Neum corridor and into Albania. Some beautiful sites and of the 42 countries I have been to so far, Croatia is definitely in the top 3. Albania was quite under rated and has some gorgeous beaches, good food, good weather and decent people. Montenegro is very mountainous and gives you chills knowing one wrong move of the wheel and you could go tumbling down to your death.
Krka and plitvice in Croatia are a must visit, Pula and Zadar are decent towns to explore. Dubrovnik is an extreme tourist trap but has some good history and some beautifully sites to see.
Montenegro has some lovely places too, the bay of Kotor is stunning.
Overall its a great drive, with some fantastic scenery, decent prices too. I don't remember needing a green card if I'm totally honest, then again it was nearly 10 years I went, so maybe rules have changed. The company I used don't exist anymore for a motor but its often cheaper to rent one in Montenegro and Cross borders. Enjoy Percy, you will love it.

Can't be a lot of help here as when I did it I was on a coach trip what I can tell you is don't do it on a coach trip!

The amount of time it takes for the authorities to check the passports of a whole busload is horrific, adding to that when we turned up there were other buses in front of us!
